One Afternoon Around Mono Lake

mono 6When I finally planned for a backpack trip to Yosemite, my attention was mainly on four places: Bodie, Sonora Pass, Tioga Pass, and Mono Lake. That means places around Yosemite.

Somehow I knew most popular places marked by tourism websites are not my most favorites. I love rediscovering natural wonders, especially places where people don’t leave footprints everyday. I am glad that I found Mono Lake and I am going there again before Winter to capture Sunset hours.

Mono Lake is a saline soda lake in Mono County, California. It’s beautiful because it is a lake. Yes which lake is not beautiful! But it’s more beautiful because of the exposed tufa towers which make the area one of the most photographed places in California. I liked how those mountains separated the blue sky and the water, but I loved the texture of the tufa rocks and the history of the lake more.

Even during a hot summer afternoon this place was less crowded. So if you want to enjoy some alone time with nature, this might be a wonderful addition to your travel list. And there’s no fish in the water, you can’t do fishing while pondering over your life!

“The lake is two hundred feet deep, and its sluggish waters are so strong with alkali that if you only dip the most hopelessly soiled garment into them once or twice, and wring it out, it will be found as clean as if it had been through the ablest of washerwomen’s hands.” — Roughing It, Mark Twain
